Based on the 2006 novel of the same title by Michelle Wildgen, “You’re Not You” centers on the relationship that forms between two very different women: Kate (Hilary Swank), a successful classical pianist in her thirties whose life is forever changed after being diagnosed with ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease) and Bec (Rossum), a directionless college student hired as Kate’s caregiver in spite of her lack of experience and own issues in life.
Arriving at a time when ALS awareness is at an all-time high due to the worldwide popularity of ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, the film looks to take away all of the gimmicks of the aforementioned trend to add a genuine human element to the disease by giving us a story and face behind the cause. Without crossing the fragile border into being over-sentimental, the film’s trailer examines the ways in which Bec’s new role as Kate’s assistant forms into a deeper connection beyond being solely a new job opportunity to help with everyday tasks, as Kate inspires Bec to bring out a new side to her whilst also rediscovering her passion for life in the process.
“You’re Not You,” which also stars Marcia Gay Harden, Ali Larter and Josh Duhamel, opens in theaters and on demand on October 10. Watch the first trailer below.
